Wii, Myself, and the Microwave

A brief break from the war. For Chanukah, my kids (and Mrs. LFD) really wanted a Wii. Now, I have no problem getting an expensive video game thingy, especially because the Mrs. & I made it clear to the kids, if you want this, your gelt is going towards it. My family then had repeated discussions that annoyed me to no end about how much better our lives would be when we got a Wii. We could exercise together. We could have an indoor family bowling night. We could do so many interactive special things. It reminded me of when my family wanted a microwave. I don't know if your family had these discussions around the table about how this marvelous invention would change your lives, but mine had them till no end. Our mom would no longer be a slave to the kitchen. Leftovers would be magically transformed into delicacies fit for a king. Our parents would have more time to spend with us and each other. On and on the list went. So out went my dad to Sears and got this nifty magical device. One week later life was about the same, except you could make oatmeal w/o boiling water first. And no one in my family likes oatmeal except my dad, who won't touch the darned thing. And FYI, it's one day (minus Shabbos)after this life altering purchase is when I'm putting up this post. And my kids are playing with Lego on the living room floor.

Ain't that always the way.....
But in truth, aren't we adults sometimes guilty of the very same thing?

I've been there. You put so much thought into getting the kids just the right present, and then they play with the box.

Zev has one at his dad's house and he loves it..a little too much..so we arent getting one here. He complains sometimes and says he wants a wii at home too, but he always finds something else to do (and sometimes its more fun than wii!)

Tesyaa-thank you! I just checked out the site. Very interesting.

We limit all tv time and wii time. Our kids have a choice of tv or wii and they only get a half an hour. They are still excited about it but we are strict about the time limit.

Yep, technology is mostly useless. People can live without most technological innovations. This is why the advertising that a company does to convince the public that they need what is being sold is so important.

G6 & SupeRaisy-I'm on my computer right now, I haven't played with the box it came in in ages... Hmmm... nice rectangle shape, good flaps on top.. excuse me. I need some quality "box time"..
Tr8terGirl- hands on stuff like a drumset is 100x more fun than a wii. I speak from experience.
tesya- Thank you. I saw the thing about "wii-knee". What we can't come up with to complain about.
Childish-The only technology that is useless is stuff the Rabbaim ban.

Tr8terGirl-I had acess to a Tama Impirial Star where I learned. I bought a set ith a friend later on and had to sell it when I got older. I've lost the skill, maybe I'll invest in a set again one day. Right now, Mr. LFD Jr. is learning clarinet. He's pretty good, and I hope he realizes when he get's older (he just turned 10) that girls dig guys who can in reality toot their own horn.
